Princess Lizzy, Mommy, and Daddy were enjoying a meal at a nice restaurant when several people were seated at the table next to them.
“Mommy, Mommy,” said Lizzy in her excited voice, “look at that lady’s beautiful dress!”
“It is lovely, isn’t it?” answered Mommy.
“I’ve never seen a dress like that before,” said Lizzy.
“Her dress is that of another culture,” said Mommy. “They are from another country. Remember all the countries we looked at on the map?”
“Oh, I do,” said Princess Lizzy, “but I didn’t know they had different clothes.”
“Not only different clothes, but different foods, different religions, different skin color, different ways of doing everyday things,” explained Mommy, “but we’re still the same.”
“Hum…how can we be different and still be the same?” asked Lizzy.
“Those things are only on the outside,” began Mommy, “but they are still Mommies, and Daddies, and children. They have two eyes, two ears, and a mouth. They have a heart that loves and can break. They laugh and cry. They want good things for their children, just like Daddy and I want for you. All those things make us just the same. It’s no different than you wearing a pink dress and me wearing a blue dress. That’s the outside stuff. But, if you could see the inside stuff, it’s all the same.”
About that time, the lady gave Princess Lizzy a great big smile. Of course, Lizzy smiled her great big smile back.
“Well, she has a beautiful outside dress,” said Lizzy, “and a beautiful inside smile!”
And, indeed she did.
